Maulbronn Monastery

Klosterhof 5, 75433 Maulbronn
Open from 09:00 to 17:30 o'clock

Maulbronn Monastery, founded in 1147, is an impressive document of the Cistercian culture and the best-preserved monastery complex north of the Alps.  In the Middle Ages it was an important political, economic and social center.  Following the onset of the Reformation, the monastery was converted into a Protestant monastery school (1556).  The Protestant theological seminary founded in 1807 still exists today.

In 1993 Maulbronn Monastery was added to the "World Cultural Heritage" list as a UNESCO world cultural monument.

The Enclosure Building (Klausurgebäude) and the church with its early Gothic "Paradies" (portico) are especially worth seeing.  In addition, the "Frühmessnerhaus" (residential house for the monk who celebrates early mass) houses a monastery museum that presents the interesting aspects of the history of the Cistercians and monastery life.  Guided tours and events are additional attractions for visitors.
